That sounds backwards, so here is what actually happens.

Paint damage does not usually come from something dramatic. It comes from the thing you do to take care of your car, done in a way that drags grit across the finish. Every wash either removes dirt from your paint or moves dirt across your paint. There is not much middle ground.

A tunnel wash does the second one. Spinning brushes hold the grit from every vehicle that went through before you. A muddy work truck rolls in at eight in the morning, and by noon that same sand and clay is being pressed into your clear coat at speed. Six months of weekly visits is how a car ends up with paint that has no depth left in the sunlight.

Most home washing does it too. One bucket, a sponge, and a bath towel is the classic setup. The sponge picks up grit off the lower panels, goes back into the bucket, and comes out carrying it. Then you wipe it across the hood.

The car gets covered in foam and left to dwell. This is the step that matters most and the one nobody does at home. The foam softens and lifts the loose grit off the surface so it rinses away — meaning it is gone before a mitt ever makes contact. Every particle removed here is a particle that cannot scratch anything later.

Two buckets, always.
One bucket has the wash solution. The second holds clean rinse water. The mitt goes into the rinse bucket after every panel to release the grit it just picked up, then back into the soap. One bucket means every panel gets washed with the dirt from the last one.

Clean mitts, not sponges or towels.
A microfiber wash mitt has deep pile that pulls grit up and away from the paint surface and holds it there. A flat sponge traps grit between itself and your clear coat and drags it. This is not a small difference.

Top down, always.
The roof is cleanest, the rockers are filthiest. Working downward means we are never carrying lower-panel grit up onto cleaner paint. The lower sixth of any vehicle gets washed last, and often with a separate mitt.

Dry properly and out of the sun.
Soft drying towels, no pressure, and never letting Florida sun flash-dry the panels. Water evaporating on hot paint is exactly how you get water spots — and our hard water here leaves mineral behind every time.

A wash that only covers what you see from ten feet away is not a full body wash. These are the areas we get on every vehicle, and the ones that separate a detail from a rinse.

• The gas cap door and the recess behind it. Collects grime constantly and almost never gets cleaned.
• Behind the mirrors and the mirror housings.
• Lower rocker panels. These catch everything the tires throw up on Highway 98 — road film, tar, and the fine white dust off the dirt stretches past Mulberry.
• The front grille and lower bumper. Where love bugs land in May and September, and where they start etching if they sit.
• Wheel wells and the arch lips.
• Around badges, trim edges, and panel gaps where dirt collects and a machine wash cannot reach.

Our Silver package at $200 is the entry point and includes a full hand wash along with wheels, tires, decontamination, spray wax, and a full interior clean. A wash on its own is not something we sell separately.
