Do it after your next wash, while the paint is still clean and dry. Use the flat of your fingers, not the tips.

If it feels smooth like glass, your paint is clean.

If it feels rough — gritty, or like the outside of an orange peel — it is not. Those are individual particles standing up out of your clear coat, and you just washed the car, so a wash is clearly not going to remove them.

That is bonded contamination, and it is the whole reason this service exists.

Most people never do this test, which is why most people do not know their paint is holding anything. The car looks clean. It just does not feel clean, and that difference is what separates a car that has been washed from a car that has been detailed.

Four things, and Central Florida supplies all of them generously.

Rail dust. Tiny iron particles thrown off train brakes and tracks, carried on the air, that land on your paint and embed. Lakeland has rail lines running straight through it, which makes this more common here than in a lot of towns. Iron particles also rust in place, which is what those tiny orange specks on white paint are.

Brake dust. Same idea, generated by your own car and everyone else's. Hot metal particles that stick to the finish and then corrode.

Road tar. Off I-4 and Highway 98, especially on freshly resurfaced stretches in the summer heat. It sprays up onto rockers, lower doors, and behind the wheels.

Tree sap and organic fallout. Under the oaks around Dixieland, Lake Hollingsworth, and Lake Morton, sap drips onto paint and hardens. Add spring oak pollen and the general organic film that builds on anything parked outside here.

None of that comes off with soap. Soap lifts what is sitting loose on the surface. These have bonded to it, and they have to be sheared off mechanically.

It is simpler than most people expect, and it is not abrasive in the way polishing is.

A detailing clay bar is an engineered resin — pliable, slightly tacky, and worked flat in your hand. With plenty of lubricant on the paint, it glides across the surface. When it meets a particle standing up out of the clear coat, the clay grabs it and shears it off, and the particle stays in the clay instead of on your car.

The lubricant is not optional. Clay dragged across dry paint will mar it, because you are pulling grit across the finish under pressure. We use a dedicated lubricant and keep the surface wet the entire time. We also fold the clay constantly to bring a fresh face forward, so we are not dragging the particles we just collected back across your paint.

When we finish, the paint feels like glass. That is the entire measurable result — you can feel the difference immediately, which is unusual in detailing.

What clay does not do: it does not remove swirls or scratches, it does not add gloss on its own, and it does not protect anything. It removes what is stuck on the surface. Everything else is a different service.

Two reasons, and the second is the one that costs people money.

One: everything you put on afterward bonds to what is underneath it.

Wax, sealant, and ceramic coatings all bond to the surface they land on. Apply them over embedded contamination and they bond to the contamination instead of the clear coat. That layer then fails early, taking your protection with it.

This is why a wax job sometimes lasts three weeks instead of three months, and why an expensive ceramic coating applied over uncontaminated paint is money wasted. Clay is why we never skip it before coating a car.

Two: polishing over grit drags it across your paint.

If a car is going to get paint correction, decontamination has to come first. A machine polisher moving across paint that still has embedded particles is grinding those particles into the finish at speed. That is how a correction ends up putting in more marks than it takes out.

Clay is not the glamorous step. It is the one that makes every step after it work.

Every six months for most drivers here. Every five if you drive daily.

That is more often than the national guidance, and the reason is what we listed above — rail lines, heavy road tar in the heat, and oak canopy over a lot of Lakeland neighborhoods.

More often if:

• You park under oaks in Dixieland, around Lake Hollingsworth, or anywhere with real tree cover — sap and pollen never really stop here
• You commute on I-4 regularly
• Your car lives outside without a garage

The test tells you, though. Wash the car, feel the hood, and if it is rough it is time regardless of when you last had it done. That is more reliable than any interval.

1. Hand wash first.
Clay does not replace washing. The car gets a proper hand wash with a foam soak so all the loose dirt is gone before clay touches anything. Claying a dirty car is dragging that dirt around under pressure.

2. Iron decontamination.
An iron remover goes on to chemically dissolve the embedded metal particles from rail dust and brake fallout. This dissolves what it can before the clay has to shear it off mechanically, which means less work against the paint.

3. Clay with heavy lubrication.
Panel by panel, plenty of lubricant, light pressure, straight-line passes. The clay gets folded frequently so a clean face is always against the paint.

4. Feel-check every panel.
We check by hand as we go. The paint tells you when it is done, and different panels finish at different rates — the front bumper and lower rockers always take the longest.

5. Wipe down and protect.
Clayed paint is bare and completely unprotected, so protection goes on the same day. That is either wax, a 6-month sealant, or a ceramic coating depending on the package.

Leaving a car clayed and unprotected is worse than not claying it. We never do it, and neither should anyone else.

How do I know if my car needs a clay bar treatment?
Wash it, dry it, and run the flat of your hand over the hood. Smooth like glass means you are fine. Rough or gritty means there is bonded contamination that a wash cannot remove.

Will a clay bar scratch my paint?
Not when it is done correctly. Marring happens from insufficient lubricant, too much pressure, or reusing a dirty section of clay. We keep the surface wet, use light pressure, and fold the clay constantly. It is also why we never clay in direct sun on hot paint.

How often should I clay my car in Florida?
Every six months for most drivers, every five if you drive daily. More often if you park under oaks or commute on I-4. The feel test is more reliable than the calendar.

Does a clay bar remove scratches?
No. Clay removes what is stuck on top of the paint. Scratches and swirls are defects inside the clear coat and need paint correction.

Does clay make my paint shinier?
Indirectly. A perfectly smooth surface reflects light more cleanly than a rough one, so paint does look better afterward. But the bigger gain is that wax or a coating applied to clayed paint bonds properly and lasts far longer.

Do I need to wax after claying?
Yes, always, and the same day. Claying strips the surface completely bare — no wax, no sealant, no protection at all. Leaving it unprotected in Florida sun is worse than not claying it. Every package that includes clay also includes protection.

What are those tiny orange specks on my white paint?
Almost certainly embedded iron — rail dust or brake dust — that has begun to rust in place. Lakeland's rail lines make this common. An iron remover plus clay is exactly what handles it.

Can I clay my own car?
Yes, and plenty of people do it well. Use far more lubricant than feels necessary, work out of direct sun, fold the clay often, and drop it if it hits the ground — a clay bar that has touched pavement will put scratches in your paint.
