Yellow Headlights Are a Safety Problem, Not a Cosmetic One
Most people book this because their car looks old. That is a fair reason. But the real cost shows up at night.
AAA tested it. Headlights that had yellowed and hazed over produced just 22 percent of the light a new headlight puts out on low beam. Not 80 percent. Twenty-two.
You feel that on the dark stretches around here. Out toward Kathleen. The rural runs past Polk City. County roads with no streetlights and deer that step out of the treeline. A clouded lens does not project light down the road — it scatters it, throwing glare sideways and leaving the road ahead dim.
Most drivers never notice it happening. The lens yellows a little each year and your eyes adjust. Then you drive a car with clear headlights and realize how much you had been missing.
That is the real argument for headlight restoration. It is not about how the car looks in the driveway. It is about what you can see at forty-five miles an hour on an unlit road.

Why Florida Eats Headlights Alive
Your headlights are polycarbonate plastic with a thin UV-protective coating applied at the factory. That coating is sacrificial. It takes the UV hit so the plastic underneath does not.
In Florida it burns off fast.
Ten years here does what twenty does up north. Cars parked in open lots all day — the Publix lot, an office lot off Memorial Boulevard, a job site with no shade — take direct overhead sun for eight or nine hours at a stretch, nine months a year. Once that factory coating fails, UV hits raw polycarbonate and the plastic itself starts to oxidize. That is the yellow.
Heat makes it worse. So does what is in the air. Love bug remains in May and September are acidic, and left on a hot lens they etch it the same way they etch paint. Road tar and debris off I-4 and Highway 98 add nicks that trap more grime.
The pattern is predictable enough that we can usually guess how a car has been parked before the owner tells us. It is also why headlight restoration in Lakeland is a different job than it is somewhere with real winters — the damage arrives sooner and comes back faster.

Why the $20 Kits Never Last
Almost every customer who calls us has already tried one. Here is why it did not work.
The kits stop at polishing. You sand or scrub the yellow layer off, buff it clear, and it looks great. That part actually works — for a few weeks.
They do not replace the protection. The factory UV coating you just sanded away is gone. Underneath is bare polycarbonate with nothing shielding it. Most kits include a wipe-on sealant that lasts a month or two in Florida sun, and some include nothing at all.
So the plastic oxidizes again immediately — and often faster than the first time, because now there is no protective layer at all. Six months later the lens is yellow again, and a little more of it has been sanded away.
Polishing is the easy half. What you put on afterward is the half that decides whether you are doing this again next year. Every headlight restoration we do finishes with a real coating for exactly that reason.

How We Restore Headlights
Four stages. The last one is the one that matters most.
1. Mask and prep.
We tape off the surrounding paint, trim, and corners around each lens. The hood comes up and nearby panels get covered. Sanding grit against paint causes damage that costs a lot more to fix than a headlight.
2. Wet sand.
We wet sand the oxidized layer off, working through progressively finer grits until the yellow is gone and the lens carries an even haze. Multiple grits matter — jumping straight to fine paper leaves the deep oxidation in place, and stopping at coarse paper leaves sanding marks that never polish out.
3. Compound and polish.
A machine polisher with compound removes the sanding haze, then a finishing polish takes the lens back to optical clarity. This is the same equipment and technique we use for paint correction, applied to plastic.
4. Ceramic coating.
Here is the difference. We seal the lens with a ceramic coating rather than a wipe-on sealant. It bonds to the polycarbonate and replaces the factory UV protection you just sanded away — the exact thing the parts store kits leave off.
That final step is why our restorations hold for years instead of months.

How Long Does It Last?
Longer than a kit, and it depends on where the car sleeps.
Garage-kept cars hold the longest. Out of direct sun, a ceramic-coated lens stays clear for years.
Cars that live outside will not hold as long. We will tell you that up front rather than after. Constant Florida UV is what caused the problem the first time, and a coating slows it down — it does not make the lens immune. If you park outside, expect to revisit it sooner. That is not a reason to skip it. It is a reason to know what you are buying.
The coating also needs time to cure after application. Keep the car out of rain and do not wash the lenses for the first day. We will walk you through it before we leave.

What Restoration Can and Cannot Do
What it fixes: yellowing, hazing, oxidation, light surface scratches, and the cloudiness that comes with all of it.
What it does not fix: cracks in the lens, moisture trapped inside the housing, or a broken mounting tab. Those are housing problems, and the fix is a replacement assembly. We will tell you if that is what you have rather than restoring a lens that is going to keep fogging from the inside.
An honest note on light output. In the same AAA testing, restoration returned light output to roughly 70 percent of a brand-new headlight. A new OEM assembly gets you to 100 percent.
So if you want maximum output and cost is not the issue, new assemblies win. But new headlight assemblies commonly run several hundred dollars each, and many are far more. Restoration takes you from 22 percent back to about 70 percent for $100 to $140 for the pair.
For most drivers that math is not close.

Headlight Restoration Pricing
$100 to $140 for both headlights.
Where you land in that range depends on how far gone the lenses are — light hazing is quicker than deep oxidation with etching.
We only restore front headlights. We do not currently do tail lights or fog lights.
Booking it alongside another service makes sense, since we are already at your vehicle. It pairs naturally with a full body wash or paint correction — clear headlights on a car with dull paint just move the problem.

Questions Lakeland Drivers Ask Us
How much does headlight restoration cost?
$100 to $140 for both headlights, depending on how oxidized they are. We quote after we look at them.
How long does it take?
Most vehicles are done in about an hour and a half. Heavy oxidation with etching takes longer.
Will my headlights turn yellow again?
Eventually, yes. The ceramic coating replaces the factory UV protection and holds for years on a garaged car. A car that lives outside in Florida sun will need it again sooner. Nobody can make polycarbonate permanently UV-proof.
Why did my auto parts store kit stop working?
Because it polished the lens but did not replace the UV protection you sanded off. Bare polycarbonate oxidizes fast in this climate. The coating is the part that lasts.
Can you fix a cracked or foggy-on-the-inside headlight?
No. Cracks and internal moisture are housing failures and need a replacement assembly. We will tell you before you pay for something that will not solve it.
Is it cheaper than new headlights?
Considerably. New assemblies commonly run several hundred dollars each. Restoration is $100 to $140 for the pair.
Do I need a garage?
No, but it helps. The coating needs to stay dry while it cures, and garage-kept lenses stay clear longer. If you park outside we will tell you honestly what to expect.
